Description
The mission of the Long Center for the Performing Arts is to provide quality facilities and supporting services for the performing arts and community gatherings for the citizens of Greater Lafayette and Tippecanoe County and surrounding areas; to creat an environment that facilitates and promotes the performing arts in the community; and to be a self-sustaining organization that can expand the Long Center and the St. John Pavilion as a viable and historic landmark.
Background
The Long Center for the Performing Arts, formerly known as the Mars Theater, was constructed in 1921 for class plays, vaudeville performances and the "more elaborate" photoplay productions. The theater was designed by a prominent local architect, Walter Scholer, Sr., in the Neo-classical Revival Style and was partially furnished by local merchants who were proud to be identified with the building of the edifice. The theater has undergone several renovation projects since 1977, but the major restoration and renovation was accomplished in 1999-2001, when the community raised more than two million dollars to facilitate a total restoration plus the addition of the adjacent building to the north, now known as the St. John Pavilion.
