Description
I combine glass with materials such as wood, rubber, fur, carpet, metal, sponge, roofing singles and practically anything else he can get his hands on, he creates abstract hybrid constructions and compositions that mimic the real world. These compositions are often combined to create environments in which the viewer can become immersed. “There is so much of the world around us that we routinely shut off or filter out. I think it’s a self defense mechanism to avoid overload or total confusion. We cannot be aware of everything all of the time, and some things we are not even capable of being aware of at all. My work tries to capture the fleeting moments, the stuff that exists in the shadows of the mind as a mix of reality, insanity, humor, images of dreams and the kinds of things we see out of the corner of our eyes for a brief second." Michael J. Amis
Background
Michael J. Amis was born in England in 1971 and grew up in a small village in the Kent countryside. For as long as he can remember, he has been interested in art and design. In 1989 he graduated Medway College of Art with a Diploma in product design. He went on to Wolverhampton University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. “I give a lot of credit to my Grandfather for encouraging my interest in art as a child. I have been making glass art since being introduced to the medium in 1989. Glass immediately captured my imagination and continues to challenge my skills as a designer and craftsman. Its creative possibilities seem endless and I discover more about its nature every day.” Michael J. Amis After Wolverhampton, the graduate program at Illinois State University brought Michael to the United States. In May of 1998, he received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Illinois State University.
