Indiana Arts, Connecting you to a world of art
Bradley, Norman
Painter (View Portfolio)
Fort Wayne, IN 46804
I paint non-representational paintings of medium size and some small landscapes. I am an expressionist and derive much inspiation from several sources: nature, my background in Latin America, expressionist painters of the twentieth century, and my own intuition. I am seriously interested in the art of painting and pay a great deal of attention to the underlying formal order of my work. My paintings contain a lot of color, both motion and emotion, and I believe in the direct expression through the elements and principles of art. I completely agree with Gauguin's idea of "Synthetism", the union of the inner and outer visions. Music has been important to me and, like the composer of music, I compose my pictures according to the principles of unity, variety, balance, and harmony. I rarely use the term "abstract", as all paintings are abstractions. I am not greatly interested in illusionism, that is, using painting to record the surface effects of nature in a literal manner.
I began painting over fifty years ago. I am now a Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. I retired in January of 2000. I taught painting and art history including: 19th century, 20th century, and pre-Columbian art history. I lived in Mexico and received my Bachelor's Degree at Mexico City College and the Degree of Maestro en Bellas Artes at the University of the Americas in Mexico City. I have competed in more group exhibitions than I can remember in Mexico, Washington, D.C., California and Indiana. I have had nearly forty- one person exhibitions including those in Mexico City, California, Washington, and the Midwest U.S and have won various awards including two most recent Purchase Awards at the 29th Elkhart Juried Regional Exhibition 2007 at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana. In terms of teaching, my area of specialization was the pre-Columbian art history of ancient Mesoamerica. My wife is also an artist.
