Whether traditionally inspired by Masters like Tiffany or more contemporary in design, my work is as much about the chosen medium as it is the image portrayed. When the viewer is fooled, even at times to the point of argument, that the pieces are in fact glass, I realize the greatest complement. “Light and Reflection” is the title of my collection for a number of reasons. Some are more technical in nature. Others have more to do with the “spirit” of the work. First, from a technical standpoint, the pieces need no back lighting, natural or artificial. The light emitted or “reflected”, even in a dimly lit room, is by virtue of the fabric selection and placement. I use my own hand painted fabrics as well as other high quality hand dyes and batiks specifically chosen for the glow they will emit when placed against the hand stitched soft black “leading”. Second, using a different definition of “light”, the pieces are much lighter in weight and easier to install than glass pieces of similar size. When a structure has a space without an actual opening, my pieces give the illusion of light through a window. Next is the real joy of my work. When the spirit of the viewer is lightened by the magic of the trompe l’oeil effect, my intent is realized. And finally for me the most profound: my faith tells me that I’ve been allowed an ability in my work to transmit the light poured through me. I’ve been in and around art and design throughout my career, but nothing has touched my heart like this. In truth, I believe my work to be merely a reflection of light from the Greatest Source.
As I pursued my Interior Design degree at Purdue University, it was always the most purely art based requirements and electives that I truly enjoyed. Much of my Interior Design career was spent in Kitchen and Bath Design. Working with builders and remodeling clients, my design tools were the hard surfaces of cabinets and countertops. Now I am back to the colors, textures, and light that led me to my degree in the first place. I grew up in Lafayette, and I live here today with my wonderful and supportive husband. Our daughter is in Indianapolis working on a degree in Art Education from the Herron School of Art and Design. Since my recent commitment to a full time art career, my resume includes Gallery Placement with Susie Gibbs Framing and Gallery in Lafayette, Indiana and Freelance Design work for Praise Banners in Nashville Tennessee. I have also completed several residential and commercial commissions including the lobby/welcome piece for the Marie Canine Cancer Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
