Description
While I have many creative interests, my current artistic experiments involve the use of local clay and ancient technologies to produce a working kiln/foundry. The goal is to achieve internal temperatures of nearly 2000 degrees, which should be suitable for melting most metals and firing most clays. In addition, I have been sampling local clays for sculpturing purposes, carving in wood and stone (current projects include a fireplace mantle from wood and a fountain from limestone), and the processing of natural pigments for paints and dyes. I prefer natural or classical motifs and the human body as subjects.
Background
My artistic education has included both formal and informal elements. I have studied art in college and had the fortunate experience to have a bronze caster (with his own foundry) in the family. I have shown and sold works in California, Ohio, and Indiana, garnering several best of show and purchase awards. My art career has been suspended for the last few years so I could persue a doctorate at Indiana University where I have been studying the social dynamics of being an artist and the social dynamics of artist's markets and colonies. However, I fell in love with the Southern Indiana landscape (and its wealth of raw materials), have bought a home and am working to re-establish my career. I have taught classes on sculpting, mold making, and papermaking.
