Art across Indiana
Indiana Arts, Connecting you to a world of art
Brackney, Marilyn
Columbus, IN 47201
My first memory of making art as a child was drawing on a foggy windowpane. Next came walls and woodwork, and then I discovered the wonderful end papers of hardback books. Finally, my parents realized that I was serious about my art, and they began providing real art materials. As I grew older, I wanted to record what I saw and produce works that looked realistic. Slowly, I came to understand that art is more than a pretty picture. This expresses how I feel about the purpose of art and the content of my work. Any subject is appropriate, and any material, whether it’s trash or gold leaf, is suitable to use as a medium for my creativity and imagination. To me, the expression of ideas is more important than creating something that may be pleasing to the eye. I like to make people think when they look at my work, and I hope to connect with them on a personal level and help them see the world in new ways. I enjoy drawing, working with mixed media, casting paper, and marbling.
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in art education and Master of Science degree in psychology from Indiana State University. I have continued my education through various workshops, including classes in marbling, printmaking, and papermaking. My work was most recently exhibited by the John Waldron Art Center, the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts, and the Indiana Recycling Coalition. In 1996, I launched The Imagination Factory, an art/reuse Web site that shows visitors how to make drawings, paintings, sculpture, prints, and crafts. Listed by the American Library Association as one of the best online resources for kids, the site has received numerous awards. In addition to hosting The Imagination Factory and teaching private art classes in my studio, I serve on the board of directors of Kidscommons Children's Museum. In June, 2005 I received the Mayor's Arts Award for Community Service from Mayor Fred Armstrong and the Columbus Area Arts Council.
